NSW biodiversity intelligence

The bush on your land has rules. It may also have a market.

Before you clear, buy, sell or sign a stewardship agreement, find out what NSW law says about the native vegetation on your lot, and whether it is worth exploring for biodiversity credits.

You can help

It's not all about carbon farming. Biodiversity is key.

Grassy woodland, remnant bush, the creek line nobody ever cleared. NSW has a market for keeping it.

Under a stewardship agreement, landholders are paid to manage it for conservation. Knowing what your land holds is where that starts.

The constraint

Native vegetation is mapped, and much of it is regulated

The NSW Native Vegetation Regulatory Map has been in force since 31 August 2026.

Category 1 land is exempt. Category 2 land is regulated under section 60A of the Local Land Services Act 2013, so clearing it needs the right pathway first.

The category on your lot shapes what you can do with it. It is worth knowing before you plan works or set a price.

The opportunity

The same vegetation can earn under a stewardship agreement

A Biodiversity Stewardship Agreement (BSA) is a voluntary agreement with the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust.

Land under a BSA generates biodiversity credits that can be sold. The landholder is then paid to manage the site for conservation.

A BSA is in perpetuity and sits on the title. Know what the land holds before you commit.
